Antique 9 ct. rose gold alternating paperclip watch chain, early 1900s
Watch chains became essential accessories during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, designed to secure pocket watches while also serving as visible symbols of personal style and craftsmanship. Rose gold gained popularity in the early 1900s for its warm tone, created through a higher copper content in the gold alloy, which gave jewellery a softer and more romantic appearance than traditional yellow gold. Alternating paperclip-style links reflected the era’s movement toward more streamlined and elegant chain designs.
This antique 9ct rose gold watch chain dates to the early 1900s and features alternating elongated links characteristic of period Albert and guard chains. Originally worn across waistcoats with pocket watches and fobs attached, chains of this style are now highly sought after as necklaces for their versatility, substantial construction, and connection to early 20th century jewellery design.
Prince Albert style 15 inches in length 7 mm. wide, oval and round link weighing 30 grams, finished with a snap closure. Can be worn as a necklace.
