Antique 18k yellow gold memorial ring, Circa 1808
Memorial and mourning rings were especially significant during the Georgian period, serving as deeply personal keepsakes created in remembrance of a loved one after death. Many examples from the late 18th and early 19th centuries incorporated woven hair beneath crystal compartments or within the band itself, reflecting the era’s tradition of preserving a physical connection to family members through jewellery. These rings were often inscribed with names, dates, or initials and worn daily as private expressions of remembrance and affection.
This antique 18k yellow gold memorial ring, dating to circa 1808, reflects the restrained elegance associated with Georgian mourning jewellery. Rich high karat gold, hand-finished construction, and sentimental symbolism were hallmarks of the period, when jewellery often carried deeply personal meaning beyond ornamentation. Surviving Georgian memorial rings remain highly collectible today for both their craftsmanship and their connection to early 19th century social and mourning traditions.
