Edwardian Birmingham Sterling Silver Hammered Pill Box – Arts & Crafts Movement
A beautifully hand-crafted Edwardian sterling silver pill box or small vanity box, executed in a hand-hammered domed form characteristic of the English Arts & Crafts movement of the early 20th century.
The underside bears English sterling hallmarks including the Birmingham anchor assay mark, lion passant sterling standard, and a lowercase “f” date letter, dating the piece to circa 1905–1906. The maker’s mark “HM” is also present, attributed to a Birmingham silversmith workshop active during the Edwardian period.
The hand-hammered finish reflects the growing influence of the Arts & Crafts movement, which emphasized traditional craftsmanship, tactile surfaces, and understated elegance in opposition to the heavily ornamented Victorian style that preceded it. Similar hand-wrought silver forms were popularized by Liberty & Co. and leading British Arts & Crafts designers during the period.
The softly domed profile and rich natural patina give the piece exceptional decorative appeal, while the compact size makes it ideal as a pill box, trinket box, or collector’s cabinet piece.
A fine example of early 20th century English Arts & Crafts silver.
