Victorian Birmingham Sterling Silver Engraved Vesta Case, 1881
A beautifully engraved late Victorian sterling silver vesta case featuring ornate foliate decoration, a monogrammed cartouche, and original striker base.
This elegant pocket-sized example is richly decorated with hand-engraved scrolling motifs and fine textured detailing characteristic of the aesthetic silverwork of the late 19th century. The front bears an intertwined monogram, adding period charm and individuality to the piece.
The case retains its original suspension loop for wear on a watch chain or chatelaine and opens to reveal a gilt-washed interior. The underside retains its original match striker surface.
Hallmarked for Birmingham, England with the anchor assay mark, lion passant sterling mark, and lowercase gothic date letter “g” corresponding to 1881. Maker’s mark “JG.”
Victorian silver vestas remain highly collectible for their craftsmanship, portability, and connection to everyday life during the late 19th century.
