Victorian Birmingham Sterling Silver Gilt Interior Pill Box, 1899
An elegant late Victorian sterling silver pill or trinket box featuring richly repoussé foliate decoration and a gilt-washed interior.
This finely detailed square-form box is decorated throughout with scrolling repoussé ornamentation framed by a scalloped border, characteristic of late 19th century Birmingham silverwork. The interior retains its original gilt wash, a desirable feature commonly used in Victorian silver boxes to protect against tarnish and enhance the luxurious presentation of personal items.
Hallmarked for Birmingham, England with the anchor assay mark, lion passant sterling mark, and gothic lowercase “z” date letter for 1899. The maker’s mark “WHW” is also present.
Small sterling vanity boxes such as this were commonly used during the Victorian era for pills, powders, keepsakes, or jewellery, and today remain highly collectible for their craftsmanship, decorative appeal, and display quality.
