Victorian Birmingham Sterling Silver Heart Shaped Trinket Box, c.1903
A beautifully detailed late Victorian sterling silver heart-shaped trinket or pill box featuring richly repoussé foliate decoration and a gilt-washed interior.
This elegant heart-form box is decorated throughout with deeply embossed scrolling floral and foliate ornamentation framed by a bold gadrooned border, showcasing the ornate craftsmanship associated with fine Birmingham silverwork at the turn of the century. The interior retains its original gilt wash, a desirable feature traditionally used to protect silver surfaces while adding warmth and luxury to vanity and dressing table pieces.
Hallmarked for Birmingham, England with the anchor assay mark, lion passant sterling mark, and date letter believed to correspond to approximately 1903. The maker’s mark “SB” is also present.
Heart-shaped sterling boxes from the Victorian and Edwardian periods remain highly collectible for their romantic form, decorative appeal, and functional display quality. Pieces of this size and depth are increasingly difficult to source in the current market.
