Victorian Birmingham Sterling Silver Pendant Compact, c.1900
An elegant late Victorian sterling silver pendant compact featuring finely engraved engine-turned decoration and a gilt-washed interior.
This unusual hanging-form compact is decorated with delicate vertical striping across the exterior, accented by a central circular cartouche and suspended from its original sterling loop attachment. The clean geometric styling reflects the refined practicality of late Victorian personal accessories, while the gilt interior adds warmth and sophistication.
Hallmarked for Birmingham, England with the anchor assay mark, lion passant sterling mark, and date letter believed to correspond to approximately 1899–1900. Partial maker’s marks remain visible.
Pendant compacts and small sterling vanity cases of this form were commonly carried for powders, pills, scent pastilles, or keepsakes, and today remain highly collectible for their wearable scale, decorative appeal, and connection to Victorian personal accessories and chatelaine culture.
